The Western Cape Department of Health (WC DoH) has issued a warning about a fake job scam that has involved four state hospitals over the past few weeks.

According to Health spokesperson, Sithembiso Magubane, the hospitals that have been affected so far are Helderberg Hospital, Valkenberg Hospital, Groote Schuur Hospital and Lentegeur Hospital. Magubane advised that the “best thing to do is ignore it.”

The scam involves sending out random SMS messages to people asking them to deposit money into an account in order to secure the job at one of the hospitals. It’s been reported that the individuals only realise it’s a scam once they present themselves at the hospital and realise they have lost the money they deposited.

The fake jobs were also advertised in local newspapers.

Police are currently investigating the matter.

The WC DoH would like inform the public that government posts would not require applicants to make payments in any form, and that all Governmental Departmental recruitment is done via community newspapers and the website www.westerncape.gov.za for departmental vacancies, where an official Z83 form will need to be completed.
