On 25 June 2015 the Health Foundation was one of four non-profit organisation finalists who pitched their projects to a panel of six donors during the Inyathelo’s Donor Dragons’ Den competition in Cape Town.

The competition received applications from over 90 non-profits nationwide. The applicants where required to submit a one-page ‘case for support’ which was assessed by a panel of Advancement and fundraising experts.

CEO of the Health Foundation, an organisation that aims to raise funds to improve public healthcare resources in the Western Cape, Jenni van Niekerk, was the first to pitch to the donors. During her five minute pitch, she explained how their five existing Mobile Wellness clinics provide school children in rural areas with primary healthcare including optometry and dentistry.

“The mobile clinics also have electric data collection and storage capability and integrates with the student’s school records and also links up with the local healthcare facility for effective monitoring,” said van Niekerk.

According to van Niekerk, to date 7,000 students have been reached with the help of the Western Cape DoH. However, to afford a full-time dentist and optometrist and expand their fleet they require funding. van Niekerk invited the funders  to support any of the following items for up to five vehicles (costs are per vehicle for one year):

  • Cost of fuel and consumables:  R150,000
  • Full-time optometrist: R320,000
  • Full-time dentist and dental assistant: R1,039,000
  • Your branding on the vehicle: R325,000

The other three organisations that pitched to the donors were the South African Education and Environment Project (SAEP) for their SA Model UN; Tsiba Education for student sponsorship; and The Centre for Early Childhood Development for their Children’s Museum, who ended up winning the pitch.

The six donors consisted of Rowan Dunn from SAB; Chris Mingo from the HCI Foundation; Lorenzo Davids from the Community Chest; Audrey Elster from the Raith Foundation; Patrick Schofield from Ripple; and Sandra Ngwena from The DG Murray Trust.

The next Donor Dragons’ Den will be hosted at the Inyathelo Sustainability Centre in Cape Town on 19 August 2015, where non-profit organisations stand a chance of winning a complementary subscription to Inyathelo’s donor directory FundingFinder, a copy of Inyathelo’s ‘Attracting Support Toolkit for NPOs’ and two tickets to attend Inyathelo’s Advancement Academy on 1-2 September 2015. Entries must be submitted before Friday 24 July 2015.
