Prof Portal Africa (PPA) is a learner management system that provides a library of learning opportunities for all South African healthcare providers.

PPA uses technology developed by Noordhoff Health, a Dutch company and a market leader in the Dutch Healthcare market, to provide a learner management system that aims to provide CPD compliant learning opportunities for all levels of healthcare workers in South Africa and possibly Southern Africa.

Where Implemented

PPA was launched in 2014 through collaboration between Noordhoff Health, Professional Emergency Care and Cape-Orange Intercultural Connections with the aim of promoting a blended learning approach for healthcare providers in South Africa.

When convenient, healthcare workers can access the online PPA platform to complete a specific module, such as Vital Signs; Basic Life Support; Urine Testing and Analysis; and Basic and Advance drug testing. On successful completion they can then attend a practical skills session. A pilot study has shown that there has been a measurable improvement in the skills of the participants in the programme, which has resulted in improved performance and patient management by healthcare workers.

With the involvement of their partners – private and public institutions and other training colleges, PPA plans to expand on their library of 30 modules, which are all based on the latest protocols and guidelines in South Africa, to further addresses the unique problems and skills required by the users.

PPA has started the process of obtaining accreditation for CPD points from the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and will start the same process with South African Nursing Council (SANC) once it has been finalised. This will allow participants to earn points while learning, as well as to keep a record of the points.
