Metropolitan Health, the largest administrator of medical schemes in South Africa and managed care provider, collected a silver award in the “Most Innovative App” category for its HIV Clinical Guide mobile application at the New Generation Social and Digital Media Awards, held in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

Metropolitan Health’s HIV Clinical Guide mobile app falls under the Risk Management division’s HIV YourLife Programme, which provides HIV management services to large corporates and closed medical schemes. The app, which was developed in conjunction with The Open Medical Project South Africa (TOMPSA), reflects the latest developments in HIV medicine and clinical care and serves as a comprehensive HIV treatment guideline for all levels of healthcare professionals. The app is available across both the Android and iOS platforms and is free to download.

HIV in developing countries has increased the demand for health services but due to various challenges healthcare professionals do not always have the resources and support to effectively treat patients. The app allows healthcare professionals to more accurately prescribe appropriate treatment for those suffering from HIV, in line with the patient’s unique condition and symptoms. It is also localised so does not require WiFi to function (only for application updates) – particularly beneficial in outer-lying regions.

The New Generation Awards serve to recognise and reward progressive work in digital media, and Metropolitan’s app was lauded as showcasing a seamless integration of user-friendly design with strong functionality.

Executive Manager of Metropolitan Health’s HIV YourLife Programme, Siraaj Adams, said: “Progressive technology is part of our company’s DNA – it is critical to our vision of bringing better healthcare to more people, and we are thrilled to have been recognised in this regard.”
