Head of the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH), Dr Hugh Gosnell, has resigned with immediate effect after only a year in office.
According DA MPL, Jack Bloom, Dr Gosnell’s departure was unexpected bad news because he has had a good track record of trying to improve the department’s performance, and is “untouched by corruption.”
Bloom also said that it appears Dr Gosnell was forced out by Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu who “likes to place loyalists in key positions.”
The GDoH has a bad track record of retaining staff; Dr Gosnell is the fourth department head to have left in the last four years. Previous heads were Sybil Ngcobo who left in 2010 under a cloud, Kamy Chetty who left for unexplained reasons in 2011 and Nomonde Xundu who resigned in 2012.
The GDoH has also had a high turnover of other senior officials. Last month Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Ndoda Biyela was suspended on corruption allegations involving tender irregularities.
