Cape Town to Host Critical Care Refresher Course

The Critical Care Society of Southern Africa’s Refresher Course will be held from the 22nd to the 23rd July 2017 at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.

South Africa’s finest minds in the field of critical care will come together in July to discuss and debate the imperatives and challenges in the fast-evolving field of ICU medicine.

In recognition of the growing importance of this specialty of medicine and the multi-disciplinary approach required to caring for the critically ill, the Critical Care Society of Southern Africa’s Refresher Course, to be held from the 22nd to the 23rd July 2017 at the Nedbank Clocktower, V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, will include topics relevant to the entire spectrum of health professionals involved in ICU – medical, nursing and allied health.

Entitled the ‘A-Z of ICU’, this CPD accredited programme has been carefully constructed to provide delegates with valuable information on the latest scientific and technological advances in the field of Critical Care. Topics covered will range from the practical to the philosophical and ethical.

Programme highlights include: Alternative therapies in ICU; Looking ahead to intensive care in 2050; Enteric flora – friend or foe: exploring the role of gut microbiome in critical illness; Family engagement in critical care; ICU acquired dysphagia; Gut failure and re-feeding systems; Critically assessing levels of oxygen/Hb/sedation; Ethics in ICU:  Autonomy, justice, communication, consent; Questions on use of social media in critical care; Optimising functional and quality of life outcomes of ICU; End of life care; Caring for the carers; Non-invasive ventilation; and Nosocomial infections in ICU.
